In the 1970s Cancun was a small fishing village. A mere 30 years later, it has become an international resort town.  The downtown area is the city proper, where most of the shopping, banks, government offices are. Most of the luxury hotels lie on the hotel zone that is almost 22 km long!  Cancun is located on a long island that encloses its own lagoon. Famed for its white sandy beaches, it is connected to the mainland by a causeway  at each end. Most of the tourists are lured by the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and year round sun. MAYAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

There are some small Mayan sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in Cancún. El Meco, a more substantial site, is found on the mainland just outside the city limits. Close by in the Riviera Maya and the Grand Costa Maya, there are sites such as Cobá and Muyil (Riviera) Xcaret, and Kohunlich, Kinichná, Oxtankah, Tulum, and Chacchoben, in the south of the state. Chichén Itzá is in the neighboring state of Yucatán.

Not many things can usually persuade me out of a beach chair, but here, activities were a highlight! Kids and adults flock to the trapeze for flips and catches. Mini Club Med has organized, supervised activities for ages 4-10. Club Med Passworld, for 11-17 year olds, and includes a kids-only space with computers, video games and a juice bar. Babysitting services can also be arranged, and dinner programs are available to give parents an evening break. For infants, a welcome program provides in-room essentials; the main restaurant has bottle warmers and baby food
